Political Divide Over New Parliament Inauguration: 25 Parties Set to Attend, 20 Parties to Boycott

A political controversy has unfolded over the decision to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurate the new Parliament building instead of President Droupadi Murmu. As a result, 20 opposition parties have declared their boycott of the event, scheduled for Sunday. This dispute has sparked a wider debate on the respective roles of the President and the Prime Minister within the constitutional framework.

On Thursday, a lawyer filed a petition with the Supreme Court, requesting an invitation for President Droupadi Murmu to preside over the ceremony. The apex court is expected to address the petition on Friday, adding further legal scrutiny to the matter.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, 20 parties, including the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and Trinamool Congress, denounced PM Modi’s decision as an “assault on democracy.” However, some parties, such as the Biju Janata Dal, have accepted the invitation, applauding the event as a significant moment in the spirit of democracy.
