A devastating heatwave has swept across Mexico, resulting in the tragic deaths of more than 100 individuals over the past two weeks. With temperatures soaring close to 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) in certain regions, the extreme heat has taken a toll on the country’s population, according to the health ministry.
The scorching heatwave, lasting three weeks, has put immense strain on the energy grid, leading to record-breaking demand. As a result, authorities were compelled to suspend classes in certain areas, leaving many Mexicans grappling with the oppressive conditions.
The majority of deaths occurred during the week of June 18-24, primarily due to heat stroke, while a few cases were attributed to dehydration. In comparison, only one heat-related fatality was recorded during the same period last year.
The northern state of Nuevo Leon, bordering Texas, accounted for approximately 64% of the total deaths. The remaining fatalities were reported in the neighboring states of Tamaulipas and Veracruz along the Gulf coast.
While recent rainfall has brought some relief and lowered temperatures in certain areas, cities in the north, such as Aconchi in Sonora state, continue to experience sweltering conditions, with highs reaching 49 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday.
