History on Peak…! Kolkata Metro Rail corporation tested India’s first underwater train
Modernity and technology are coming fast in railway facilities. Amidst the gifts of Vande Bharat high speed trains, now for the first time in the country, preparations are going on fast to run a passenger train under water. Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation is going to test India’s first underwater metro rail tomorrow in Kolkata.
According to reports, the underwater metro train being tested will connect Esplanade on the east bank of the Hooghly River and Howrah Maidan on the west bank. Howrah Metro Station is the deepest metro station in the country at 33 meters below the ground level. This underwater train track is said to be 4.8 km long with twin tunnels of 520 meters under the river. On which work was going on for the last one year and now its work has been completed.
It costs about ₹120 crore per kilometre to build the tunnel but the manufacturing cost of the tunnel underwater, which is deep in the Hooghly river costs increased to around 157 crores by per kilometre, as per ANI reports.
2 trains will run on trial, there will be 6 coaches
The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation is waiting to complete its second section (2.5 km) between Sealdah and Esplanade before resuming movement. In addition, it will be connected to the 16.6 km long East-West corridor through Sector-V. Officials have said that 2 trains will run on trial from Salt Lake Depot of Metro Rail to Esplanade via East Bond Tunnel between Esplanade and Sealdah, which will currently have 6 coaches.
