Over 230 People Dead, 900 Injured in Three-Train Accident in Odisha

In a devastating incident that unfolded in Balasore, Odisha, two passenger trains collided, resulting in a significant loss of life and numerous injuries. Here are the key details of the incident:

The Balasore train collision claimed the lives of over 230 people, while almost 900 individuals sustained injuries. Tragically, there is a fear that many passengers may still be trapped, raising concerns over a potential increase in casualties.

The collision occurred when some coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express (Train No. 12841) derailed and fell onto adjacent tracks. Subsequently, the Yashwantpur-Howrah Superfast Express (Train No. 12864), traveling in the opposite direction, collided with the derailed coaches.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, a third freight train was also involved in the accident, further intensifying the impact.

Rescue operations are currently underway under the supervision of Sudhanshu Sarangi, the Chief of Odisha Fire Services. Teams from the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and the state’s disaster relief force are diligently searching for trapped passengers and working to clear the debris obstructing their access.

Prompt medical response has been mobilized, with medical colleges and hospitals in and around Balasore being alerted to provide immediate assistance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the tragic accident. He personally spoke with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to assess the situation and assured all possible assistance to those affected. The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is personally monitoring the situation, along with the Chief Secretary and other senior officers, to ensure effective response and support.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has instructed Revenue Minister Pramila Malik to visit the accident site and coordinate relief efforts, according to news agency PTI.
