The Delhi Police is expected to file a chargesheet on Thursday in the sexual assault case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Anurag Thakur, had assured the protesting wrestlers last week that the Delhi Police had been directed to file the chargesheet by June 15. The wrestlers had temporarily suspended their protests until this date.
During a recent meeting, the wrestlers had put forth several demands, including the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, withdrawal of FIRs against the wrestlers, his removal from the WFI, and the appointment of a female president in the wrestling body. So far, the sports minister has agreed to withdraw the FIRs and has proposed the formation of an internal grievance redressal committee, to be headed by a woman, within the WFI.
The wrestlers have accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also a BJP MP, of sexually exploiting young wrestlers, including a minor. Singh has refrained from commenting on the matter, stating that he would wait for the chargesheet and the court’s verdict. He has denied the allegations and attributed them to a conspiracy by Congress leaders from Haryana, due to his reforms as the WFI chief.
In other news, Brij Bhushan Singh has announced his intention to contest the Kaisarganj seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections next year. He expressed confidence in the BJP’s victory in the 2024 elections while criticizing the Congress party.
