Indian Artist Sriya Lenka Makes Sensational K-Pop Debut in ‘Karma’ by BLACKSWAN, Showcasing Odisha’s Rich Culture
In a groundbreaking moment for Indian talent, Shreya Lenka, widely known as Sriya, has become one of the only two Indian artists to break into the exclusive and highly coveted K-pop industry. Hailing from Rourkela, Odisha, the 20-year-old has made her debut as a member of the K-pop girl group ‘BLACKSWAN’ in their highly anticipated comeback album.
The latest single, titled ‘Karma,’ showcases the mesmerizing talent of BLACKSWAN and highlights Sriya’s captivating presence. The music video, shot in her home state of Odisha, features vibrant street scenes and enchanting ancient ruins amidst lush greenery. While maintaining the signature high-energy choreography, the video also pays homage to the nostalgic red brick walls of schools and incorporates a young Odissi dancer dressed in traditional attire.
What sets BLACKSWAN apart is their fusion of Indian culture and couture in their outfits, seamlessly blending it with the dynamic choreography and music that defines K-pop groups. Sriya, along with Brazil’s Gabriela Dalcin, was handpicked at the age of 18 and brings a unique blend of classical Odissi dance and contemporary styles to the group. She attributes her distinct “deep voice” to her grandmother’s guidance and found creative ways to train during the COVID-19 lockdowns, utilizing her open-air terrace as a makeshift studio.
As the global popularity of K-pop continues to surge, the multi-billion dollar industry is expanding its horizons to cater to international fans while preserving the elements that propelled it to fame.
