“Allahabad High Court Orders Scientific Survey of Controversial ‘Shivling’ at Gyanvapi Mosque”

The Allahabad High Court has instructed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a scientific survey of a disputed structure inside Varanasi’s Gyanvapi mosque. Hindu petitioners claim it to be a “Shivling.” The court emphasized a scientific approach and avoiding any harm to the structure during the survey.

The Gyanvapi mosque authorities refute the claim, stating it is a part of a fountain in the “wazu khana” used for ablutions. The discovery of the structure during a video survey prompted Hindu women’s request for access to pray at a shrine and a scientific investigation to determine the age of the alleged “shivling” and the presence of ancient idols.

This high court order holds significance for the legal and religious debates surrounding the Gyanvapi mosque. The survey’s outcomes will have a pivotal role in shaping the understanding and historical significance of the contested structure, impacting perceptions and arguments regarding this contentious site.
