Violence erupted in Manipur, curfew imposed in 8 districts, internet services closed

The demand to classify the Meitei community as a Scheduled Tribe has caused a stir in Manipur. Tribal organisations are staging large-scale demonstrations in opposition to the Meitei community’s demand to be included in ST. As a result, mobile internet services have been suspended throughout the state and curfews have been imposed in 8 districts.

Know Whole Matter

Due to the violence during the tribal agitation, curfew was imposed in eight districts of Manipur on Wednesday, and mobile internet services were shut down throughout the entire northeastern state. The violence had broken out during the “Adivasi Ekta March,” which had been organised by a group of students to protest their demand for the Meitei community to be classified as a Scheduled Tribe (ST).

The All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) has called a march in opposition to the growing pressure for the Meitei community to be included in the ST category. A senior police officer claimed that thousands of protesters attended the rally and that there were reports of violence in the Torbang area between tribals and non-tribals. The official claimed that the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Mobile internet access was unavailable for five days, but broadband was available.
According to  the situation is still tense, but many protesters have begun going back to their houses in various hills. Curfews have been imposed due to the situation in both tribally and non-tribally dominant Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts as well as Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam, and Bishnupur districts, he said. Mobile internet access has been disabled nationwide for 5days.
