West Bengal Live : Election-related violence claimed the lives of at least nine people in West Bengal on Saturday as voting for the three-tier panchayat elections in the state was taking place, according to officials. According to them, five TMC members, one representative from each of the BJP, CPI(M), and Congress, as well as a supporter of an independent candidate, were among those murdered. 5.67 crore voters are expected to exercise their right to vote in order to select members for about 928 seats spread among 22 zilla parishads, 9,730 panchayat samities, and 63,229 gramme panchayats. Over a dozen people have died as a result of widespread violence since the election results were released on June 8 in different sections of the state, including a teen.

The rural elections, which will be held in areas that make up roughly 65% of the state’s population, will also give parties one last chance to evaluate their booth-level organisation before the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, as the majority of the state’s 42 parliamentary seats are located there. In the meantime, on July 11, the votes for the panchayat elections will be counted.
