Scientists from Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology and Kutch University have successfully discovered the rarest natural element on earth from mushroom.

There is great news for cancer patients. It may be known that scientists of Kutch district of Gujarat have discovered a rare element on earth in a research. Scientists from the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology and the University of Kutch have successfully discovered a rare natural element called statin from mushrooms.

Mushrooms growing in the country’s largest district of Kutch may provide a key chemical component for radiation therapy given to cancer patients.

Scientists have discovered statins that are not only rare but also have a short life span. According to scientists, the availability of statins on earth is only in a few grams. Statins are also known to reduce the side effects caused by chemotherapy. This radioactive element gets destroyed within a few hours.

In this regard, the director of Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology said that cobalt radiation is used in chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer. But cobalt stays in the body for a long time and damages cancer cells as well as healthy cells, leading to side effects. Statins target only cancer cells and become inactive after a while, causing minimal harm to the body.

What are the benefits of statins?

Side effects of chemotherapy include hair loss, weakness, vomiting, blood clots, memory loss. Cobalt stays in the body for a long time so the interval between two chemotherapy sessions is also long.

The chief scientist of the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology, who is working on the project, claimed that researchers across the world have discovered that this radioactive element can be used to treat tumors and other cancers.

“A large number of studies and researches are being done all over the world.”

Importantly, a large number of studies and researches are being conducted around the world for the therapeutic use of statins. However, a major problem is that the supply of this element is limited because it can be made in little space. As a result, in-depth research is difficult due to low availability. However, if it can be extracted from mushrooms, there may be hope for better cancer treatment.

Notably, the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology has already successfully cultivated edible as well as medicinal mushrooms. The scientists provided some mushrooms to the Department of Chemistry, Kutch University for laboratory evaluation of edible mushrooms.

However, during this test, a rare form of astatine was found. Another scientist reported that “we plan to step up the research to raise funds to support studies for further characterization and purification of the element”. This will help cancer patients to recover from the effects of chemotherapy.
