Sania Mirza has been roped in as the mentor of Royal Challengers Bangalore for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) to be played in Mumbai from March 4 to 26.

On Wednesday, the franchise also announced the signing of Australian Ben Sauer as the head coach. Sawyer is the head coach of the New Zealand women’s team and was part of the women’s World Cup winning team with Australia last year as assistant coach

Former Tamil Nadu offspinner and lead talent scout Malolan Rangarajan has been named assistant coach, while former India batsman VR Vanitha will come on board as fielding coach.

They have also brought in RX Murali as power-hitting coach. Murali has built up an excellent body of talent locally in Bengaluru, having helped train many Karnataka players as well as Mayank Agarwal, among the more prominent names in recent times.

Sania Mirza is excited to work with young Indian talents on mental health. Sania is the first Indian woman to win a major title – she has won 6 titles in women’s singles and mixed doubles.

He is expected to join the team after the conclusion of the ATP Dubai Open, which is likely to be his last professional tournament. The 36-year-old Mirza announced his retirement from professional tennis ahead of the Australian Open, where he and partner Rohan Bopanna finished runner-up in the mixed doubles.

Mirza said, “I was quite surprised to be offered a mentorship role, but I was also really excited.” “I want to make young girls believe that sports can be one of the first career options for them. I want to help the next generation believe in yourself, that no matter what the odds are against you, you can achieve your goals.”

Mirza was particularly excited about working with the young Indian players and helping them deal with the pressure.

He said “there are so many similarities (between cricket and tennis). Every athlete thinks the same, they go through the same pressure. Just handling pressure situations, accepting them is very important. Pressure is a special thing, if you can’t accept it, you can’t get better under pressure. The biggest champions are those who can handle the pressure.”

Sania further added, “The mental aspect of it is something I am looking forward to working with the girls. If what the IPL has done for men’s cricket can do for women’s cricket, then playing the game could become a natural choice for young girls

RCB on its Twitter handle wrote, “A pioneer in Indian sports for women, a youth icon who has played fearlessly and defied odds throughout her career, a champion on and off the field. We are proud to welcome Sania Mirza as the mentor of the RCB women’s cricket team.

The Royal Challengers put together a star-studded line-up at the auction, which featured Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Sophie Devine, Dane van Niekerk and Richa Ghosh. The team will begin their WPL campaign against Delhi Capitals at the Brabourne Stadium on March 5, the second day of the tournament.
