The Supreme Court on Monday heard a plea seeking a direction to schools across the country to provide free sanitary pads to girls studying in classes 6 to 12. The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to frame a uniform policy within four weeks. The court said that this is an important matter. The Central Government has also been asked to involve the States and Union Territories.
The Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Affairs will be the nodal officer to interact with the State Governments. The Center will file an updated status report within three months. During the hearing, ASG Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, told the Supreme Court that it would focus on improving menstrual hygiene for young and adolescent girls. But the responsibility of providing health services rests with the respective state governments, as public health is a state subject.
Provision should be made for safe disposal of sanitary pads
The court noted that, in addition to the above directions, the State Mission Steering Group and the UT NHM shall be directed to ensure rationing of toilets and low-cost vending machines or sanitary pads to girls in residential and non-residential schools in their respective schools. give. , Apart from managing these machines, they will also ensure that there is a system for the safe disposal of sanitary pads.
