In a distressing incident at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, a male cheetah named Agni was wounded during a fight between two groups of cheetahs. The altercation took place in the park’s open forest area on Monday evening.

Agni is currently receiving treatment, and there has been an improvement in his condition. This incident adds to the concern following the recent deaths of six cheetahs, including three cubs born in the park since March, raising questions about the management and administration of Kuno National Park.

Efforts to Revive Extinct Cheetahs in India

In an endeavor to revive the extinct cheetah population in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released eight cheetahs (five females and three males) brought from Namibia at Kuno National Park in September of last year.

An additional 12 cheetahs were imported from South Africa in February this year. However, the cheetah, once declared extinct in India in 1952, faces challenges in its reintroduction.

The ambitious Project Cheetah, undertaken by the Indian government, aims to reintroduce wild species, particularly cheetahs, following the guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

India has a noteworthy legacy of wildlife conservation, with initiatives like ‘Project Tiger’ playing a vital role. Initiated in 1972, Project Tiger has not only contributed to the conservation of tigers but has also positively impacted the entire ecosystem.

As the country strives to protect and revive endangered species, it is crucial to address the recent incidents at Kuno National Park and ensure the well-being of the cheetah population for a sustainable future.
