Gujarat is on high alert as an “extremely severe” cyclone named ‘Biparjoy’ approaches the coast. The cyclone has intensified from a very severe cyclonic storm and is expected to hit south-southwest Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coasts.
The exact location of landfall will be determined in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised the suspension of fishing operations and cautioned against venturing into the Arabian Sea and along the Saurashtra-Kutch coasts until June 15. The IMD has also urged people at sea to return to the coast and regulate their activities accordingly.
The cyclone is currently moving northeastward over the east central Arabian Sea and is approximately 550 km west of Mumbai.
It is predicted to cross Saurashtra and Kutch, as well as the adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) by noon on June 15. The cyclone is expected to bring strong winds with a maximum sustained speed of 125-135 kmph, gusting up to 150 kmph.
Several districts in Gujarat, including Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Morbi, Junagarh, and Rajkot, are likely to experience significant damages on June 15.
Thatched and kutcha houses may be destroyed, while pucca houses, power and communication poles, and crops could suffer damage. Transportation systems may be disrupted, and small boats and crafts could be at risk. The visibility in affected areas will be severely impacted.
The Gujarat government has taken several measures to mitigate the impact of the cyclone. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in coastal areas.
Shelter houses will be set up in six districts to relocate residents living within a 5-10 km radius of the coastline to safer places. Various departments, including fisheries, health, and agriculture, have been instructed to coordinate their efforts.
The IMD has issued heavy rainfall warnings for several districts in Gujarat on June 14 and 15. Mumbai has already experienced high tidal waves and rainfall due to the cyclone. Additionally, the IMD has provided weather forecasts for different regions in India, including predictions of heavy rainfall in certain areas and heatwave conditions in others.
Flight operations in Mumbai have been impacted due to the cyclonic activities associated with Cyclone Biparjoy. The high tidal waves and heavy rainfall caused by the cyclone have led to the closure of a runway at Mumbai airport.
As a result, some flights have been canceled or delayed. This disruption in flight operations is a direct consequence of the cyclone’s intensification into a severe cyclonic storm.

India Weather Forecast for the Next 4 Days:
Northeast India: Expect widespread light to moderate rainfall with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy falls over the next four days.
East India: Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim for the next 36 hours, followed by heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next three days. Andaman and Nicobar Islands may also see heavy rainfall during this period.
Northwest India: Hailstorms could occur in certain areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the next three to four days. Rajasthan may experience severe thunderstorms with squalls on June 15.
West India: Anticipate heavy rainfall at isolated places in Konkan and Goa today, and in the Gujarat region on June 15. Saurashtra and Kutch can expect heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 14 and extremely heavy rainfall on June 15.
South India: Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations in Kerala over the next 36 hours, and along the coastal areas of Karnataka today.
Heatwave warning: Isolated pockets in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh will likely continue to experience heatwave conditions for the next four days. South Haryana-Delhi, south Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha may also face heatwave conditions until June 13.
