The Education Minister of Karnataka, Madhu Bangarappa, has announced that the Congress government will make a decision that benefits all students regarding the hijab ban and controversial textbook changes.

While refraining from commenting on the ongoing hijab ban case in court, Bangarappa emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a favorable outcome for students.

A group of academicians recently met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to address concerns over the hijab ban and demanded reforms in the education sector.

They highlighted the plight of thousands of girls who are deprived of education due to the controversy surrounding the hijab ban, urging the government to lift the restriction.

In December 2021, six students from a government pre-university college in Udupi district protested against being denied access to classes for wearing the hijab.

The matter reached the Karnataka High Court, which ruled that the hijab is not considered essential to the practice of Islam. However, the Supreme Court later referred the case to a bench led by Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud for further examination.

Furthermore, the Congress government aims to review the textbook revisions introduced by the previous BJP government.

The party’s manifesto emphasized the restoration of true values and scientific temper in textbooks, expressing concern over distortions and insults to revered figures in Karnataka’s history and literature.

The Education Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to the students’ education and the careful review of the textbook changes without disrupting their studies.

The Congress government plans to establish a committee to assess the revisions made to the textbooks, ensuring expert guidance in the process.

While the Congress government intends to address the concerns raised by the academicians and implement reforms, former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed reservations about the review process, stating that lessons based on Indian culture and principles should be preserved.
