In a recent development, Madhya Pradesh has initiated an investigation following allegations that schoolgirls were compelled to wear scarves, triggering a social media uproar.

A prominent private school in Damoh district came under scrutiny after a poster featuring the board exam toppers showcased non-Muslim girls wearing scarves. The viral post claimed that the school enforced the hijab on these students.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Chairperson, Priyank Kanoongo, brought the matter to the attention of the Damoh district collector. The district authorities promptly responded, stating that they received the NCPCR’s complaint on May 30.

In an attempt to address the issue, the Damoh district education officer met with the families of the students involved. Surprisingly, no formal complaint was lodged by any parent.

According to the school administration, the dress code for female students comprises scarves, salwar, and kurta. Students have stated that there is no obligation to wear a scarf every day, and non-compliance does not result in any disciplinary measures.

The school management emphasized that they have never forced students to wear anything contrary to their cultural or traditional practices. The director of the school, Mushtaq Mohammad, clarified that the girls were wearing scarves, not hijabs, as part of the dress code.

However, right-wing groups including the VHP, Bajrang Dal, and the ABVP staged protests in Damoh, accusing Ganga Jamuna Higher Secondary School of imposing the hijab on non-Muslim students.

Taking cognizance of the situation, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also intervened, emphasizing that no school should compel students to wear attire that conflicts with their cultural and traditional norms. He has directed the local administration to conduct an exhaustive probe, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

The incident has sparked a debate regarding the autonomy of students in choosing their attire and the importance of respecting cultural diversity within educational institutions.
