Ram Chandra Paudel elected new President of Nepal
Ram Chandra Paudel of the Nepali Congress was on Thursday elected the third President of Nepal. A common candidate from a coalition of eight parties, including Podel, the Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre), received the votes of 214 members of parliament and 352 provincial assembly members.
The total number of electors for the election of the President is 882, including 332 members of parliament and 550 members of the provincial assemblies of the seven provinces.
Election Commission spokesperson Shaligram said 518 provincial assembly members and 313 members of the federal parliament voted in the presidential election. This is the third presidential election in Nepal since it became a republic in 2008.
Analysts have said the biggest challenge for the new president is to maintain an impartial constitutional role.
“The president is not supposed to independently act, nor be a separate power centre,” constitutional expert Bipin Adhikari told Reuters. “In most cases the president is supposed to act on the recommendation and with the consent of the prime minister.”
Nepal is still struggling to recover from the economic troubles brought on by COVID-19, which led to a drop in the number of foreign tourists coming to climb the country’s mountain peaks . Reviving tourism is necessary to bolster Nepal’s economy.
