Wrestlers’ Protest in Delhi Turns Chaotic, Police Registers FIR for Rioting and Unlawful Assembly
In a tumultuous turn of events, chaos ensued at Jantar Mantar in Delhi as a group of protesting wrestlers faced detainment while attempting to march towards the newly inaugurated parliament building.
The Delhi Police promptly registered an FIR, charging them with various offenses including rioting, unlawful assembly, obstruction of public servants from performing their duties, and causing harm to public servants.
The scuffle erupted when wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia were stopped from advancing towards the new parliament building during its inauguration. Consequently, the Delhi Police detained 700 individuals, including 109 protesters, across the national capital.

The detained female wrestlers were later released, while Vinesh Phogat confirmed her own, Sakshi Malik’s, and Sangeeta Phogat’s freedom. However, other wrestlers remained in custody.
This incident garnered significant attention and condemnation from opposition parties such as Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and Trinamool Congress.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the police action, referring to it as the “arrogant king crushing the voice of the people.” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her dismay, stating that it was shameful to witness such treatment of national champions.
