G20 Summit Begins Today in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Amid High Security

In a significant development, the G20 Summit will commence in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first major international event in the region since the revocation of its special status in 2019. The three-day summit, taking place from May 22 to 24, is being held under tight security measures, with a three-tier security grid and aerial surveillance drone monitoring. National Security Guard (NSG) and MARCOS commandos have been deployed, along with Jammu and Kashmir Police’s special operation group (SOG), to ensure a safe environment and prevent any potential terrorist incidents.

Srinagar has been adorned with decorations, and the local community is eagerly welcoming the G20 summit delegates, recognizing the positive impact it will have on tourism and business in the region. Despite the high-profile event, there are no restrictions on public movement, and all shops and businesses in Srinagar are open, reflecting the optimistic atmosphere surrounding the summit. Pakistan has repeatedly expressed discontent over India’s decision to hold the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Kashmir, considering it an “irresponsible move.” However, India has firmly responded, highlighting that G20 meetings are held across the entire country, including Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which are integral parts of India. The Indian government asserts that hosting the G20 summit in Srinagar reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity and economic growth throughout the nation.

The G20 Working Group meeting in Jammu and Kashmir will focus on five key priority areas: Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skills, MSMEs, and Destination Management. The objective of the meeting is to strengthen economic growth, preserve cultural heritage, and promote sustainable development in the region. Representatives from G20 member countries, invited nations, international organizations, and industry stakeholders will be participating in this crucial event.
