Madhya Pradesh holds the renowned Jain pilgrimage site of Bawangaja (meaning 52 yards). It is located in the Barwani district. The world’s second largest megalithic statue of Lord Rishabhadeva, the first Jain Tirthankara, stands there; it was carved out of a mountain about 6 km south of the River Narmada. The Statue of Ahimsa is the largest. The statue is 26 metres (84 ft) tall. At a height of 1,219.4 m (4,001 ft), in the centre of the Satpura range, lies the 84 ft (26 m) tall megalithic statue (carved out of a single rock) of Lord Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankara and founder of Jainism. It was made at the beginning of the 12th century. Unlike the Gommateshwara statue of Lord Bahubali in Shravanabelagola, Karnataka, this statue is supported from the back. Eleven temples make up the area’s complex in addition to the monument.
In a manner similar to the Gommateshwara statue of Lord Bahubali at Shravanabelagola, the idol is positioned at the base of the mountain.[Reference needed] With an estimated 1.5 million worshippers, the Mahamastakabhisheka monument will be organised in 2020. According to an inscription from 1503 CE, Bhattaraka made the necessary repairs to the idol. The idol underwent more repairs in 1989–1990, and a ceremony was held in January 1991 to dedicate it.
Indrajit, Kumbhakarna, and many more were able to achieve liberation. This temple contains the three historic foot statues of Indrajit, Kumbhakarna, and the other.The two idols of Lord Mllntha and Chandraprabha are placed in the main altar, with the exception of foot representations. Furthermore, the main assembly hall (Mahamandap) has many idols erected on both sides.[Reference needed] An annual fair called Bawangaja Yatra is held on the full Moon day of the Hindu month of Pausha.In 2016, Bawanga Trust completed a number of construction projects, including the renovation of the temple complex and the construction of a 3-story dharmshala with 108 rooms equipped with all contemporary conveniences.
