Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India is the Mahakaleshwar Temple, which is situated in the historic city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Mahakal lingam at this temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva, is thought to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), drawing currents of Shakti (strength) from within itself. One of India’s 18 Maha Shakti Peethas is Mahakaleshwar.

Know About Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Temple

One of the main draws is the daily Bhasm Aarti that occurs in the Mahakaleshwar Temple. Every morning before dawn, the Aarti begins. In this religious ceremony, holy ash from the ghats is carried and applied to the lingam before the holy prayers are offered to the idol of Lord Shiva. The fact that this Aarti is done at the temple in Mahakaleshwar—the sole Jyotirlinga temple—adds to the excitement and thrill of witnessing it.

You can reserve tickets for this Aarti online, but you must do so one day in advance. Only until 12:30 PM are applications accepted, and at 7:00 PM the list is announced.

Kal Bhairava Temple, Ujjain 

Bhairav is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, and Kal Bhairava is the most important among the eight Bhairavas. If ancient scriptures are to be believed, Kal Bhairav temple is said to be related with the Tantra cult, a secret religious sect who thrived upon black magic.

There is a Shivalinga in this temple which during Mahashivratri attracts thousands of visitors to this religious site.

Ram Mandir Ghat, Ujjain 

Ram Mandir Ghat is of immense religious significance to Hindus because it is one of the four locations where the Kumbh Mela takes place every 12 years.

It is considered to be one of the oldest bathing Ghat in connection with the Kumbh celebrations. Millions of people throng this place during the mega Kumbh festival as it is believed that a dip here can wash off all you sins. Watching the sunset from the Ram Mandir Ghat is one of the most enchanting scenes you’ll experience.

Harsiddhi Temple, Ujjain 

The Harsiddhi Temple boasts of an idol of Annapurna painted in dark red colour between the idols of Mahasaraswati and Mahalaxmi.

This temple, was almost in an irreparable condition, until the Marathas decided to reconcile it. This is the reason why the temple has a Maratha touch to it.

Kaliadeh Palace, Ujjain

Situated on an island based in the Shipra River, this Palace holds immense religious significance. It was constructed in 1458 AD. The Palace is flanked on both sides by the waters of the rivers and the technical aptitude of the predecessors can be seen in the man-made tanks and channels.

Bhartrihari Caves, Ujjain 

Legend has it that this is the very place where Bhartrihari, the step brother of Vikramaditya and a very renowned poet used to live and meditate after relinquishing all the luxuries of life.

The caves are situated on the banks of River Shipra, adjacent to the temple of Gadkalika, this is the reason the Caves were a serene place to be in and hence accentuating Bhartrihari’s concentration while meditating.
