UK Taxpayers Bear This Massive Bill for Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, Details Inside

In a monumental event that captured the attention of the world, the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II incurred a staggering cost of £162 million for UK taxpayers, according to recent revelations by the treasury. The solemn ceremony, held on September 19, 2022, marked the culmination of a period of national mourning during which multitudes flocked to Westminster Abbey to pay their respects to the monarch lying in state. Queen Elizabeth, who reigned for an extraordinary 70 years, passed away at the age of 96 in Balmoral Castle.

The treasury disclosed that the Home Office bore the largest share of expenses, contributing £74 million towards the proceedings. The Department of Culture, Media and Sport followed closely, with expenditures totaling £57 million. Additionally, the Scottish government allocated £18.756 million for the Queen’s lying in rest.

Leaders from around the globe descended upon London to join the memorial, while millions of people worldwide tuned in to witness the historic funeral. The chief secretary to the treasury, John Glen, emphasized the immense significance of the state funeral, describing it as a moment of profound national importance.

Throughout this period, hundreds of thousands of individuals paid their respects in person, participating in the lying in rest in Edinburgh, the lying-in-state in Westminster, as well as gatherings in London and Windsor for the state funeral on September 19. The general public also displayed unwavering support for King Charles and other members of the royal family as they journeyed across the United Kingdom during this time, Glen remarked.

Ensuring the smooth execution of these events, characterized by dignity and the safety of the public, remained the government’s utmost priority. As departments finalize their accounts for publication in the upcoming months, the government has now provided an estimate of the costs incurred by the main government departments and devolved administrations involved, explained Glen.
